Celebrating Community, Culture, and Forty Years of Impact

If you know me, you know I’m a sucker for a good theme. Whether it’s a color-coordinated party, a viral hashtag, or a creative awareness day, I love the way themes bring people together. That’s why I look forward to the growing list of social media holidays and national days—a fun reminder to celebrate community, creativity, and unity all year long.


But if I had to pick a favorite month, it would definitely be August.


August is Black Business Month—a time to uplift, recognize, and celebrate the powerful contributions of Black entrepreneurs whose ventures fuel our communities and economies. It’s also packed with delightfully quirky days like National Coloring Book Day, National Lazy Day, National Tell a Joke Day, and (my personal favorite) National White Wine Day—though any wine will do. 😊


This August, we invite you to join OUCAN in celebrating 40 years of advancing our mission to break the cycle of poverty in Ohio’s urban communities. More than a milestone, this moment is a tribute to you—your commitment, your work, and your belief in the power of community action.


Here’s how you can join in the celebration with OUCAN this month:

  • Tell Your Story: Share your proudest community action moments, favorite quotes, or what drives you to do this work. Selfies, office snapshots, or graphics are welcome! Send them to us at info@ohioucan.com for a chance to be featured on OUCAN’s social media.

  • Support Black-Owned Businesses: Be intentional about shopping with Black-owned businesses and local entrepreneurs in your area.

  • Lift Others Up: Nominate a colleague or client who exemplifies the spirit of community action to be recognized for their outstanding service—email info@ohioucan.com.

  • Share Your Voice: Submit a short editorial to be featured in the OUCAN newsletter. We’d love to highlight your success stories and the work you’re doing in Ohio’s urban communities.

  • Amplify the Network: Share OUCAN content on your social media, website, or newsletter and help expand our reach.

  • Make a New Connection: Reach out to another member of the OUCAN network to build relationships and exchange best practices.
